This course identifies the challenges to the current overall energy system in Mozambique and introduces options for long term (30-40 years) development/transformation of the energy system. In this course, the students will analyse the existing energy system as this is an important starting point from which development/transition must occur. It will address both fossil/conventional and renewable energy; considering the present state of art; the potentials; and future outlook of these resources

The course will address three main topics. First, for the context, the demographic transition and development including population increase, urbanisation and its effects on energy use will be discussed. Second, rural and urban energy systems will be addressed including discussing the current energy systems (traditional energy sources, charcoal and fire wood) that are in use, the role of renewables and fossil energy sources. Large parts of the population are not electrified, mainly in rural areas. Third, options for the future will be considered such as transformation from traditional system to modern renewable based energy systems in Mozambique, grid and off-grid solutions in response to demand, resources of fossil and renewable energy in Mozambique, energy scenarios: local, national, regional, global. In this course, the concept of the energy matrix will be dealt with.
